What is Postnational Art History? explores the intersection of contemporary art with the concept of the postnational, challenging traditional national narratives in art history. Edited by Charles Green and Ian McLean and designed by Beaziyt Worcou, this book originated from a colloquium at the Buku-Larrngay Mulka Centre in Yirrkala, Arnhem Land.
The publication features essays and reflections, many focused on the Yirrkala Church Panels, and examines how transnational and interdisciplinary connections shape art beyond Western norms. It highlights Indigenous, diasporic, and postcolonial perspectives, offering fresh viewpoints on art history.
Part of the CoVA x Perimeter initiative, a collaboration between the Centre of Visual Art at the University of Melbourne and Perimeter Editions, the book presents research across three themes: Postnational Art Histories, Feminism and Intersectionality, and Art + Science. Contributors include Anna Arabindah-Kesson, Rex Butler, Wulan Dirgantoro, A.D.S. Donaldson, James Elkins, and many others.
