Sight Unseen delves into the profound implications of making the previously unseen visible, sparked by the groundbreaking capture of the first image of a supermassive black hole in 2019 by the Event Horizon Telescope project. This collection of essays and images explores the convergence of art, science, cultural knowledge, and imagination.

The book emphasises collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches that transcend hierarchical boundaries. It draws on both Western and First Nations knowledge systems to prompt readers to consider the act of seeing beyond mere sensory perception of light. Instead, Sight Unseen encourages seeing together through cross-disciplinary collaboration, with assistance from non-human forces and beings, and with an awareness of the ecological and cosmological contexts that extend far beyond human understanding.

The essays and images within Sight Unseen engage with themes of visibility and invisibility in the universe. They highlight how scientific advancements and artistic interpretations reveal hidden phenomena and challenge our perceptions of reality. The contributors include scholars, artists, scientists, and cultural theorists who explore topics ranging from climate change to artificial intelligence, blending insights from diverse fields to enrich our understanding of the interconnectedness of existence.

Supported by the collaborative publishing initiative CoVA x Perimeter, the book is part of the Art + Science series, which fosters dialogues and research collaborations between scholars and practitioners across disciplines. It aims to reframe scholarly research by offering new perspectives on critical global challenges through the lens of art and science.
