Returning is a breathtaking exploration of Kirli’s journey toward self-discovery, connection to Country, and cultural identity. Through heartfelt experiences, Kirli tackles contemporary themes such as decolonization, self-determination, First Nations matriarchy, queerness, justice, love, liberation, and truth-telling, all set against a backdrop of significant upheaval marked by natural disasters, the COVID pandemic, and the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Each poem is beautifully paired with evocative artwork that enhances its meaning, creating a rich tapestry of visual poetry. These artworks were first showcased at SHAC Gallery on Gundungurra land in 2021 as part of the exhibition titled Returning. Kirli’s multi-disciplinary practice encompasses a variety of mediums, including watercolors, ink on hand-dyed silk, digital imagery fused with text, and installations featuring handcrafted possum skin cloaks and weavings.

This project was developed in close consultation with First Nations Elders, Custodians, academics, and artists, ensuring that it resonates deeply with the cultural narratives it seeks to convey.
