What do we truly seek from our public spaces? As we emerge from the profound limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic, Let’s Go Outside presents an array of artistic possibilities for reimagining these spaces.

This timely collection features contributions from twenty-five prominent Australian and international artists, writers, and curators, including Cuban activist Tania Bruguera, the Indonesian collective ruangrupa, British art historian Claire Bishop, and Gunditjmara elder Vicki Couzens.

Together, they examine creative practices in the public realm, addressing topics from the settler-colonial context in Australia to responses to global crises in the United States, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. The essays, case studies, interviews, and visual contributions explore themes of remembrance, public history, urban regeneration, community engagement, accessibility, and activism, revealing how these ideas are transforming art in public spaces.

Rooted in discussions from the 2019 symposium Let’s Go Outside: Making Art Public, organised by Monash University Museum of Art and Monash Art Projects (MAP), this volume reflects the growing interest in presenting art beyond traditional gallery settings.
