Continuing in the vein of the acclaimed Afro-Atlantic Histories, this publication by Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) embarks on a monumental endeavour, compiling collective curatorship and research conducted by artists and scholars spanning territories from Australia, North America, South America, to Scandinavia. The collaboration between MASP and Kode Bergen Art Museum unfolds with an invitation to guest curators from Indigenous nations, resulting in a traveling exhibition that probes the profound impact of European colonisation on Indigenous visual culture.

Featuring over 150 artists, the artworks showcased range from 17th-century colonial religious paintings to contemporary film and video installations. The goal of Indigenous Histories is not to encapsulate the entirety of each region's intricate histories, but rather to offer a mosaic of perspectives—a concise yet potent selection that facilitates global juxtapositions of Indigenous groups. Divided into eight thematic sections, including seven regional focuses and one on contemporary Indigenous activism, the book is meticulously designed, incorporating traditional motifs and enhanced with over 300 illustrations.

Each thematic section is enriched by narratives contextualised by guest curators and museum directors from renowned institutions worldwide. Australian artists prominently featured include ANATJARI III TJAKAMARRA, ANGELINA NGAL PWERLE, DANIEL WALBIDI, and many others who contribute to a rich tapestry of Indigenous artistic expression.

Indigenous Histories emerges not only as a scholarly exploration but as a visual testament to resilience, creativity, and the ongoing dialogue around decolonisation within the arts. It invites readers to contemplate the intersections of history, culture, and artistic expression through a lens that is both expansive and deeply rooted in Indigenous perspectives.
