Gordon Bennett: Selected Writings

“If I were to choose a single word to describe my art practice it would be the word question. If I were to choose a single word to describe my underlying drive it would be freedom… To be free we must be able to question the ways our own history defines us.”

Gordon Bennett: Selected Writings is the first comprehensive collection of the late Gordon Bennett’s (1955–2014) writing, offering essential insights into one of Australia’s foremost contemporary artists through his own words. This publication brings together nearly forty pieces—both published and unpublished—including essays, artist statements, letters, and interviews that span Bennett's nearly three-decade career.

By emphasising the significance of the written word in Bennett's artistic and intellectual pursuits, Selected Writings reveals how he intertwined art and life, reflecting a complex dialogue between words and images. Edited by Angela Goddard and Tim Riley Walsh, this work is co-published by Power Publications in Sydney and Griffith University Art Museum in Brisbane.

The book also includes glimpses into Bennett's personal archive, featuring previously unseen notebooks, correspondence, sketches, and preparatory compositions. These elements provide new insights into his creative process, influences, and professional relationships, further highlighting Bennett’s profound contributions to discussions on race and identity in both national and global contexts, while reinforcing his impact on postcolonial discourse in the twenty-first century.
