Esperanto – Newell Harry

In Stock
This extensive publication celebrates the immersive installation art of Newell Harry, an Australian-born artist of South African and Mauritian heritage. Harry's work spans over a decade and reflects his deep engagement with cultures and languages across Oceania, the Asia-Pacific region, and South Africa's Western Cape Province, where his family resides. His projects often explore themes of colonial migration, cultural hybridity, identity complexities, and the narratives of displacement and myth.
Documenting his largest solo project to date, Esperanto, held at the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA), this publication showcases newly conceived artworks alongside existing pieces, objects, and archival materials. It includes texts by Michael Moran, Djon Mundine, Jasmin Stephens, and features an extensive interview between James Gatt and Newell Harry.
'Esperanto' refers to a universal language concept developed in the late 1800s, symbolising hope for universal understanding and harmony across borders. For Harry, 'Esperanto' serves as a metaphorical space where diverse voices from different times and places converge. His intention is to challenge dominant narratives and amplify the perspectives of marginalised groups within Western knowledge systems. The publication presents Harry's artistic practice as a dynamic exploration, embracing the fluidity of knowledge and the transformative power of art.
Highlighted in this volume is the new photographic commission '(Untitled) The Point' alongside significant artworks from public and private collections, as well as materials from the artist's personal archive.
