“These paintings are me adopting the attitude of fearlessness. Just painting. Following my gut. Utilising what I know and what I feel self-referentially to move forward. ”

Emma Beer’s paintings capture the mystery of light, alive with vibrancy and energy. Each work resonates with the myriad ways light can transform, revealing subtle shifts in tone and hue, shade and shadow. This ever-changing quality defines Beer’s layered compositions, which create a dynamic interplay of space and depth. Her paint is stretched and manipulated, pigments thinned and veiled, ultimately reformed into bold threads that define and structure the canvas.

As Beer reflects, “What stands out in my work is the palpable tension between surface and space, the lively and ethereal relationships of color, and the intriguing duality in both substance and technique.” Each piece invites viewers to experience the captivating dance of light and form, challenging perceptions and evoking a sense of wonder.

This exhibition catalogue features a commissioned text by Anja Loughead, alongside an illuminating interview with the artist and her studio team, including Peter Alwast, Kirsten Farrell, Dioni Salas, Joel Arthur, and curator Tony Oates.
