Dual/Duel: Brook Andrew/Trent Walter

Dual/Duel is a collaborative artists' book by Brook Andrew and Trent Walter, drawn from the State Library of Victoria's picture collection, with additions from the artists’ own archives. Through a series of carefully juxtaposed images, the book weaves new narratives that connect the artists' diverse cultural backgrounds—Wiradjuri, Sri Lankan, Celtic, and European—with themes of conflict, immigration, power, and the complexities of history.
The practice of image juxtaposition, central to both Andrew’s and Walter’s work, challenges the ways we see and remember, offering fresh perspectives on often painful histories. In reordering familiar images of power and narrative, Dual/Duel invites new ways to engage with and acknowledge these histories, creating space for healing and understanding.
The book includes an interview with Maxine Briggs, Koori Librarian at the State Library of Victoria, who helped guide the artists in applying Indigenous protocols to the library’s photographic collections.
