“Credo is a useful addition to the Tillers collection of material and presents an insight into the thinking of a challenging, complex and somewhat enigmatic artist. He is one who has thought deeply over many years about what it means to be an artist growing up in Australia while still being intimately aware of the grand traditions of art that exist elsewhere around the world.”

Credo collects essays spanning various stages of Imants Tillers’ career, including pieces like Locality Fails, Metafisica Australe, and Journey to Nowhere, concluding with a new essay titled The Sources, where Tillers reflects on the artists and writers who have influenced his work.
Born in Sydney in 1950 of Latvian parents, since 1981 he has used his signature canvas boards to explore themes relevant to contemporary culture, from the centre/periphery debates of the 1980s to the effects of migration, displacement and diaspora. These essays articulate an aesthetic credo that extends beyond personal expression, addressing the broader implications of migration in literature and art.
Through what he terms “the revolt of the margins,” Tillers’ writing is marked by wit, irony, and intelligence, inviting readers to engage with the complexities of provincialism and the dynamic nature of Australian aesthetics.
