“Uniting this internationally diverse group of artists is the positioning of the body at the centre of their work. The human body is twisted into strange new forms, is pushed around, is looked at and desired, as each artist explores how our physical forms are shaped by the social worlds around us.”

BODIED brings together an eclectic group of international artists who place the body at the core of their exploration, investigating how our physical selves are molded by the societal landscapes that surround us.
Originating as an exhibition at The Art Gallery of Western Australia in 2020, the project featured works by Gordon Bennett, Cheryl Donegan, Alin Huma, Cheiko Kawaguchi, Jani Ruscica, Kawita Vatanajyankur, and Wong Ping. In this book, curators Rachel Ciesla and Robert Cook compile a series of interviews with each artist, delving into how their artistic practices intersect with contemporary political and cultural dynamics.
BODIED marks the inaugural publication in the Unclaimed Ideas series by the Simon Lee Foundation Institute of Contemporary Asian Art. Conceived as a collection of paperback readers, Unclaimed Ideas presents essays and interviews authored by both established voices and emerging talents who redefine our understanding of art and its relationship to the most pressing global issues of our time.
