“I first saw Maria Kozic’s Calendar Girls paintings, two of which adorn the cover of this issue, Miss March and Miss July, at Neon Parc in Melbourne. Now exhibiting in a horrorthemed show at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), I still remember how palpably they evoked the fantasy of feminine perfection alongside the reality of violence against women. As one of the ACCA curators, Jessica Clark, says, “Horror is the everyday.” Yet Kozic’s women are defiant, returning any gaze directed their way.”

Art Guide Australia is a print and online magazine exploring contemporary Australian art. Our editors and our team of writers and contributors know the local art scene and keep you informed through engaging and thoughtful articles.

We speak with artists, curators and gallerists to learn more about their ideas and share them with an audience who want to know more about Australian art and what to see.

We’re here to support a vibrant and diverse arts community and our aim is to provide independent, considered editorial coverage alongside a comprehensive picture of what’s happening in the visual arts across Australia.

In this issue:

With our latest cover artist Maria Kozic painting the fantasy of feminine perfection alongside the reality of violence, our November/December issue chronicles an Australian summer in which many women artists are having striking, absorbing showings. We have five women artists writing on Louise Bourgeois; we profile Tacita Dean, Betty Muffler and Sundari Carmody; step inside Kirtika Kain’s home studio; and look at how fairy tales, through artists like Kiki Smith and Tracey Moffatt, offer radical forms of female transgression.
