Art Guide Australia January/February 2026

“In this view, how art gets created—the drafting and false starts that make it what it is—is at best a cute little story to help with marketing, and at worst a waste of time. Artmaking is thus seen as at its best when it is frictionless; when the artist most resembles a production line, as though we live in a world where the art that is made faster and more painlessly is naturally "better."”

– Joseph Earp

Art Guide Australia’s January/February issue is wrapped in summer vibes. Our aquatic cover image is a still from April Phillips and Friends with Computers, whose digital installation Under Waters has been developed through the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts’ inaugural boorda yeyi Immersive Arts Commission.

As Phillips told Rosamund Brennan, this work is “so handmade in the realm of digital. Everything is created with a lot of care and love”. It’s a theme which echoes through this issue, with artists being guided and challenged by their chosen materials in the service of their vision.

For the Indonesian and Australian artists involved in Pasar Malam (Night Market), creating the large-format screenprints for this touring exhibition was also a challenging process. However, as Josephine Mead writes, the resulting project highlights the possibilities of such collective creative exchange.

The summer reading continues with the next in Art Guide’s long form essay series The Long View, with painter and novelist Joseph Earp exploring the recent wave of Australian literature set in the world of Australian art.

This and more in the January/February 2026 print edition of Art Guide Australia.
