“I hope that in the year 2122 the art/craft divide no longer exists, and that we live in a peaceful, tolerant, egalitarian society with climate change no longer a threat to our survival. I'd like the visitor to be surprised that my work is 100 years old, either because they thought it was much older or more recent.”

Renee So’s distinctive practice spans ceramics, textiles, furniture, and glass, drawing inspiration from art history, museum collections, and gendered symbolism. Her work is characterized by an embrace of craft techniques, cross-cultural perspectives, a touch of humor, and a steadfast feminist viewpoint.
Accompanying her major 2023 survey exhibition at Monash University Museum of Art, Renee So: Provenance showcases over a decade of her artistry. The publication features newly commissioned essays by writers Hélène Maloigne and Chus Martínez, along with a conversation between So and exhibition curator Charlotte Day. Designed by the London studio A Practice for Everyday Life, it includes illustrations that highlight the diverse art historical influences on So’s creations—from the earliest ceramics to objects looted from Yuanmingyuan during the mid-nineteenth century.
